It's almost always cheaper to build a house - or even have a house built - than it is to buy one. When you buy a house, you're paying extra for the convenience of a ready-made house that's been lived in for you and is ready to move into immediately. Here, at least, all the permit fees, inspection fees, and fee fees are usually all figured into the contractor's bid. You also get the house *you* want. You get the benefits of modern house-building technology, which will save you money in the long run as well. On the other hand, a newly-built house will need to be painted and decorated and it won't have had the benefit of someone else living there and finding out all its quirks for you.
