Ok, here is my current plan...I use my Beetle dual line kite and start modding it. Here's the concepts so far:
- Replace the (black, plastic, hollow, rigid yet flexible) spars with a similar material that is equally rigid and light and hollow...but clear.
- Use ultra-bright LEDs at the ends of the spars to light them.
- Use LEDs for tip and wing lights. Perhaps flashing, if the mechanism is light OR find some lighted strips of some sort to brighten the delta spars.
- Possible find a bunch of plastic fiber optics (maybe cruise the secondhand stores looking for those hideous old laps) and make a short, lit, tail
- Find a cheap-ass camera and attach it for aerial shots. I've got a cheap old digital camera but it's a royal pain in the butt to use and has pathetic resolution. Maybe a digital disposable? How do I set it off?
- Hope that all the stuff I add isn't too heavy for the kite on anything but the windiest days.

Oh hey, that would be so cool if you got it working! Ever since I was a kid I've wanted to make a pretend ufo. My dad was big into model airplanes and helicopters, and he had one helicopter that resembled a flattened octopus. I always wanted to modify it to make it more like what people typically expect a ufo to look like, put blinky lights on and stuff, and then fly it around town. Adding a camera would be just way too much fun! You have to share if you get yours working... Posted by tzulah @ 10/02/2003 01:57 PM PST |
